The survival strategy of Korean enterprises!
The winning formula and the behind stories of fifty-two rival enterprises
Easy and detailed material written by a longtime economy journalist.

A clean cut outlook on Korea’s economy through the scope of “rival-nomics.” It is a thorough investigation on the winning strategy of fifty-two of Korea’s finest enterprises - - - how these companies coped with rivalry as it expanded and the process of grasping the competitive advantage.

Learn how LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics started out, Hyundai’s legendary success in the Middle East, the challenge and fall of NC Soft and Nexon. You will read about important entrepreneurs’ struggle and competition in and out of the country which helped pull Korea through the economic crisis. Get to know what happened backstage between GS Home Shopping and CJ Home Shopping, Kia Motors and GM Daewoo, and SK Telecom and KT over mobile phone and internet services. Find the clues on how to make your business become a winner in the competition.

The writer has organized the source of the company’s competitive power into seven categories: entrepreneurship, getting out of crisis, changing the game rules, rules of competitive advantage, and more. This book will give you insights on how to start a business, how to become number one, how to be competitive, and how to deal with changes.

In the appendix section, you will also find the author’s view on micro-economics such as ‘the butterfly effect of greed: the economic crisis started in the US through flashback effect’ and ‘glass ceiling and woman-CEOs.’ The CEO comparison at the end of each chapter is an interesting section you don’t want to miss.

Picturesque Mythology: Dreams of Mythology Dwelling in Paintings

Sixteen illustrated letters for you from Hwang Gyeong-shin, the editor of PAPER magazine. Sparkling fragments of dreams found in the figures and paintings of Greek mythology.

A tale that began a long, long time ago has come to us through Hwang Gyeong-shin, the author, reaching past time and distance. The author tells a dreamlike tale, in a language both familiar and simple that resonates in the heart - - -a tale of mythology about you and me, a tale about us.
Through mythology, we can reflect on our problems and find comfort. Myths do not teach us lessons. The world of mythology does not end in poetic justice, nor does it present us with lessons or solutions to real life problems. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of that, myths bring us comfort, in a curious way.
The book consists of four chapters, titled Love, Desire, Sorrow, and Loneliness, poignant emotions felt by those who live in this world. Neither the figures in Greek myths nor those who live in the 21st century are free from the whirl of such emotions. Sixteen tales, sixteen mythological figures, and their portrayal on canvas by the well known artists. This is a story about ourselves, “very old, but very new.”

About the Author
Hwang Gyeong-shin graduated from the Department of English Literature at Yonsei University. She joined Seoul Media Group in 1989 and worked as a journalist for the magazine Mook, as a news reporter for The Happy Home in 1992, and as the chief journalist for Eve. She launched the magazine PAPER in November 1995 and is currently the editor thereof. Her books include I Started Out as a Lemon, Had I Really Met Him? Somi’s Paper Piano, A Happy Ending for Everyone, A Picturesque World, The Chocolate Post Office, It’s All Right, Even Time Gets Lost There, A Sad Goodbye, and A Million Dollar Chocolate.
Science Essays for Future Presidents

To the physicist author, there are too many irrationalities and rationalization disguised as rationality. Therefore, the author looks into the world of politics, economy and culture through the eyes of a rational scientist.

Using the Duhem-Quine thesis, which states that it is impossible to test a scientific hypothesis in isolation because an empirical test of the hypothesis requires one or more background assumptions, the book answers why the then candidate Lee Myung-bak was not scrutinized immediately despite various suspicions raised against him in the 2007 presidential election.

According to Ph.D. Lee Jong-phil, assertions such as “the incompetent left-wing government has ruined the country” or “If the Grand National Party comes into power, there will be war on the Korean peninsula” are not actually observed scenarios or proven theories. The author points out that “there is only prediction in social phenomena or the humanities, and unproven theory, belief turned into science, subjective comparison and large logical leaps are commonplace.”

This book can be read as social criticism by a scientist. The author remarks, “While politicians and the president do not have to be physicians, the problems will grow more serious if they cannot think scientifically.” In this book, the author explains and analyzes politics, economy, and culture with popular theories of physics. The topics include “why politicians and diplomats must learn physics,” “Lisa Randal, the scientist who inspires Steven Spielberg,” “The discovery of dark-matter proves the ignorance of mankind,” and “game theory in FTA negotiation.”
